Evaluating My 100 Day Project from The Snarky Quilter

I finished my last 100 day project collage on June 2 and am now pondering exactly what to do with a plastic bag full of 4 by 4 inch collages. Almost all are abstract compositions, though some could be considered impressionistic landscapes and a few have recognizable images.

My original parameters were to glue painted, printed and magazine photo scraps onto squares of card stock, and add a stamped image to them. I had a plastic tub full of scraps left from previous projects that I augmented with magazine photo strips about halfway through. I tried to use the scraps ...

What’s On My Design Wall from The Snarky Quilter

As of the beginning of the week, my design wall was a bit crowded.

I have two quilting projects ongoing, plus work from my Textural Style class, as well as photos to inspire new projects. Starting from the top right, there’s my two single color studies from class.

The blue one is done except for an edge treatment. The red one has become a two color study and has lots of big stitch embroidery. I have a section I want to embroider, but it’s mostly done. I have to figure out an edge treatment, but it won’t ...

Sixteen Days In from The Snarky Quilter

Finally, this year I’m doing the 100 day project. What’s that? You choose a creative project, do it every single day for 100 days, and share your process on social media. The organizers define creative widely, but I chose to make 4 by 4 inch collages from my paper scraps and stamps. Why? I already had all the materials needed, the size makes it doable, and it’s a chance for more composition practice.

Since February 22, the official start date, I have made 16 small collages. Sometimes I made two in a day as I had all ...

It’s The Little Things from The Snarky Quilter

Not every piece of art has to be a blockbuster. Sometimes doing little projects can be satisfying, too. Over the past week I have been inspired to create mini bits by what turned up when I went hunting for a missing quilt. I am ashamed to say there’s no method to my quilt storage system other than compatibility between quilt size and storage container. A quilt may be rolled up, under my bed, in a tote, or in a big black trunk. So I looked through a lot of stuff before I found what I sought. Along the way ...

100 Days of Free Motion Quilting: Day 10 from Goer

My new 100 Day Project is underway. With 9 days left on Quilting the Countdown, I'm on Day 10 of my new project, 100 Days of Free Motion Quilting.

I'm committed to at least 15 minutes of free motion quilting each day, though I'm certainly averaging a bit more. The first quilt (and 9 of my first 10 days quilting) has been my elephant quilt (from Elizabeth Hartman's Spectacular Savanna pattern).

I began by quilting the trunk and head. Then began on the ears.

I used nested Cs to fill each section on the ear. You ...

100 Days of Free Motion Quilting from Goer

I have 18 days left in my Quilting the Countdown 100 Day Project, but I just couldn't resist jumping in with the large community of folks starting a new 100 Day Project Today.

I decided I would commit to 15 minutes of free motion quilting a day for the next 100 days. I currently have (at least) four of my own finished quilt tops, one of which is basted. Plus I'll be making four Project QUILTING submissions and two other quilt along quilt tops in the next two months and they will all need quilting. And also, I ...

Considering a New 100 Day Project from Goer

I have been enjoying the consistency of a 100 day Project. It's such a great way to build skills, dabble with techniques, iterate on a theme, or buckle down to focus on getting something done. In my last complete 100 Day project I completed a five mini quilt series of Improv Log Cabins. Currently, I'm working on a WIP from 2015. In both of these I set myself a manageable goal of 15 minutes a day. Some days that 15 minutes sure feels like work, but most days (even those that start out feeling like work) I work ...

100 Day Project: Week 10 Update from Goer

With the excitement of the inauguration, I kinda forgot it was Wednesday and I needed to post my 100 Days of Patchwork City update!

We are ten weeks into the Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 29 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks.

I've come to a bit of a crawl on this project, but I'm still chipping away. (However, I've finished two quilts so far this year! The first one featured the Pantone Color of the Year.) I finished one block ...

100 Day Project: Week 9 Update from Goer

We are nine weeks into the Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 36 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks.

I finished one block this week. This brought me to 56 out of 75 blocks complete. Slow progress is still progress. And I'm apparently off my game with photography, because I just realized that I didn't even take a picture of that block. Whoops! I'll share it on IG this week and in next week's update post here on the blog. I ...

100 Day Project: Week 8 Update from Goer

We are eight weeks into the Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 43 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks.

I finished three blocks this week. This brought me to 55 out of 75 blocks complete. It was a little slower going than I thought it would be since 4 of the 6 blocks in the new colors have a lot of template pieces. The finished blocks shown feature Kona Tomato, Kona Papaya, and Kona Wasabi.

There's been lots of fabric selection and some cutting ...

100 Day Project: Week 7 Update from Goer

We are seven weeks into the Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 50 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks

I finished two blocks this week. This brought me to 52 out of 75 blocks complete. (I think I'm on track to finish all the blocks by the end of the 100 Day Project.) The finished blocks shown feature Kona Tomato.

This is the only black and white print that I'm using that includes another color. I'm afraid I'll regret it, but ...

100 Day Project: Week 6 Update from Goer

We are six weeks into the Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 57 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks (a project I started in 2015!)

I finished three blocks this week. This brought me to 50 out of 75 blocks complete. Two-thirds done with blocks! The finished blocks shown feature Kona Charcoal.

The start of the week was cutting out all my pieces (and using my filing system of keeping them in the book).

Then I started sewing them together, working on all three blocks ...

Purple Improv Log Cabin Mini Quilt from Goer

As I reached the end of my 100 Day Project (July - October 2020) I realized that my series of mini quilts was one color short of a rainbow. Therefore, I had no choice but to make my final improv log cabin purple. There weren't many days left, so I opted for quick and easy. I hadn't made a quarter log cabin yet, so that's what I created, alternating black and white prints with purple prints.

I chose two filler motifs for the free motion quilting.

In 100 days, I completed these five mini quilts, start to finish ...

Orange Improv Log Cabin Mini Quilt from Goer

During my Summer 100 Day Project to make Improv Log Cabin mini quilts I stumbled upon the idea to made a spiral in my log cabin.

This log cabin was precisely pieced. I sketched on graph paper to make my plan. Then got to work.

I decided to combine my spiral plan with orange scrappy slab. (I think I had a piece of orange scrappy slab started that I was able to build on to).

First think was to cut up my scrappy slab. I used 2 1/2" strips, trimmed down to size for each log.

My palette was ...

Red Improv Log Cabin Mini Quilt from Goer

I'm still playing catch up on showing you my finished improv log cabin mini quilts from my last 100 day project. You can see my green and yellow quilts in previous posts. Today, I'm sharing my red version! My main rules were to use black, white, and one color, and that my finished quilt would be 16 1/2" square, bound in black Kona.

In my red quilt, I chose to start with a traditional quilt block in the center of the log cabin. The sawtooth start block is one of my favorites, so I started with that ...

100 Day Project: Week 3 Update from Goer

We are three weeks into Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 78 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks.

I finished 2 blocks this week, bringing me to 34 out of 75 blocks complete. The blocks shown feature Kona Clover and Punch (I think).

I started the week with cutting out the majority of the six blocks in these two colors. These two sections will actually stack vertically in the finished block.

When I'm piecing I like to chain piece... I don't break thread ...

Yellow Improv Log Cabin Mini Quilt from Goer

I shared the first of my five mini quilts completed during my 100 day project a couple months back. The project I actually started piecing on day 1 back in July was this yellow quilt. Day 1 started with these first five pieces sewn together.

I'd started the project with a plan for the color palette (black, white, and shades of yellow) and the intent to make a log cabin that would finish at 16 1/2" square. I'd chosen the three black and white prints you see here, and before I started cutting or sewing I thought ...

100 Day Project: Week 1 Update from Goer

We are one week into Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 93 days left until QuiltCon. I'm working on my dormant Patchwork City WIP and it's been exciting to get back to it. My goal is 15 minutes a day, though some days I have worked longer on this project. Here's a glimpse at what I've gotten done this week.

Aided by the fact that I had three blocks precut, I finished two blocks this week, bringing me to 30 out of 75 blocks complete. The blocks shown this week feature Kona Grass Green ...

100 Day Project Starts Tomorrow! from Goer

Tomorrow I'll be starting a new 100 Day Project. (I know! I haven't even shared all the quilts I finished in my last 100 Day Project that wrapped up last month! Stay tuned for those.)

Backstory: I started a 100 Day Project in April and stopped participating after day 49. I had realized that the scope of my initial project was a little too robust for the amount of time I had to actually sew. I'd pivoted a little to finish another project (which fit the technique requirements of my initial plan, generally speaking), and I wasn ...
